Two million strollers are being recalled by baby gear maker Graco after four strangulation deaths in the U.S.

Older versions of the Graco Quattro Tour and MetroLite strollers, all made before 2007, are now being recalled. On Wednesday, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, along with Graco, announced the recall of strollers due to four strangulation deaths between 2003 and 2005 in the U.S.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission says it is also aware of five reports of infants becoming entrapped, resulting in cuts and bruises, and one report of an infant having difficulty breathing.

It says entrapment and strangulation can occur, especially to infants younger than 12 months of age, when a child is not strapped in properly.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reports an infant can pass through the opening between the stroller tray and seat bottom, and the baby's head and neck can become entrapped by the tray.

Edmonton mom Kairstey Hopwood feels recalls involving deaths of even one child should be issued as soon as possible.

"That seems really odd that we haven't heard about that before and why would we only hear about it now...five years later?"

Graco did not respond to CTV's calls questioning why the recall took so long to issue. The company is advising consumers to stop using the recalled strollers and contact Graco for a free repair kit.

Health Canada is also providing Canadian consumers some tips to ensure a child's safety in a stroller.

  • Do not leave children unattended in strollers.
  • Always use the stroller's restraint system.
  • Infants and young children should never be placed to sleep in products that are not specifically designed to accommodate an unattended sleeping infant, such as carriages, strollers, car seats, infant swings and bouncers.
  • If your child falls asleep in a stroller, leave the restraint system on and do not leave them unattended or transfer a sleeping child from a stroller to a crib.

To order a repair kit, contact Graco at 1-877- 828-4046.
