After months of delay and much anticipation, a new 150-bed mental health facility will start accepting patients this week.
Covenant Health's Villa Caritas will open its doors Wednesday, with seniors from the chronically overcrowded Alberta Hospital moving into the new space.
The facility is located northeast of the Misericordia Community Hospital campus in the city's west end, and will treat people with complex mental health and medical needs.
Officials say the addition will mean 44 more geriatric beds in Edmonton – a 42 per cent increase in access.
