A man was found just steps away from a McDonald's drive-thru on Edmonton's south side, early Tuesday morning, suffering from what appeared to be knife wounds.

The incident happened just after 2 a.m. in the parking lot of the restaurant at the corner of Calgary Trail at 51 Avenue.

Witnesses told CTV News that the victim may have been slashed in the throat and was critically wounded when help arrived.

Police said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon that they are awaiting results from the Medical Examiner's office.

Investigators say the victim is known to police, but are not releasing his name at this time.

A man living in a condo complex near the McDonalds described the incident as "horrific", saying "It's pretty scary, people go in there with their kids, then you hear this kind of deal."

The parking lot had been cordoned off and crime scene investigators remained at the location Tuesday afternoon.

Scott Pattison with the Edmonton Police Service said homicide detectives had located witnesses and were conducting interviews.

No arrests have been made at this point; police say they will provide an update after the autopsy is conducted.
