Emergency crews were forced to shut down a section of highway Tuesday afternoon, after a tanker carrying sulphuric acid flipped west of Edmonton.

Police said a radius around the intersection of Highway 16 and Highway 60 had been shut down Tuesday afternoon, after a semi flipped west of Edmonton and spilled sulphuric acid.

During the closure, westbound drivers were diverted to Winterburn Road, while eastbound lanes of Highway 16 were open, drivers were advised to use Highway 16A as an alternate.

All traffic north and southbound on Highway 60 at Highway 16 was being diverted.

The area was closed in the interest of public safety – police said the spilled chemical was reacting with moisture, so the public was advised to avoid the area.

After 6 p.m. Tuesday, officials said both lanes of Highway 16 had been reopened – and only the off-ramps for Highway 60 remained closed.
