Edmonton police are investigating after a dog was shot and seriously injured during an incident in a west end home early Monday morning.

Police told CTV News officers were called to a reported break and enter at about 2:15 a.m. at a home in the area of 187 Street and 98 Avenue.

On the scene, police said officers found a dog had been shot in the head – two people inside the home were not injured.

“When police responded to the scene it was discovered that a dog had been shot,” EPS spokesperson Leila Daoud said. “The dog was taken to an emergency vet clinic where the dog was in critical condition, the dog was a pitbull mix dog and it was shot in the head.”

CTV News learned later Monday morning that the dog was still alive, but undergoing surgery after it was shot in the head.

Shortly after the incident, members of the EPS Canine Unit began tracking the suspect – described as a male, who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants at the time of the incident.

Late Monday morning, police said they were still searching for the suspect.

As for the residents of the home, police are questioning the two people who were inside in relation to a drug investigation.
