Edmonton police have arrested a 19-year-old male in connection to the death of a 23-year-old woman.

The victim's family members gathered at the Stadium LRT station Monday afternoon, where a 23-year-old mother-of-two was shot dead Friday night.

Family members are identifying the victim as Heather Rae Thurier.

The victim's brother, who says he was with her at the time of her death, tells CTV News she asked a young man for a cigarette before he pulled out a long-barreled weapon and shot her. The suspect fled on foot immediately after.

Police say the suspect allegedly pulled out a long-barreled weapon, possibly a sawed-off shotgun, and shot Thurier. She was left with serious trauma to her head and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police have not released the name of the young man they have arrested, but say charges are pending.
