Firefighters spent several hours on the scene of a massive blaze into Wednesday evening, after a fire started and then spread on an acreage south of Wetaskiwin.

Officials said late Wednesday afternoon that a fire was burning less than two kilometres south of Wetaskwin on Highway 2A.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Lee Sawicki, the fire had spread to two residential homes – both were considered total losses, and had destroyed travel trailers and outbuildings.

Firefighters from Wetaskiwin, Mulhurst and Camrose responded to the fire.

Sawicki said efforts to gain the upper hand had been hampered by strong winds in the region – and a short time later, the fire was under control, but wasn’t out yet. No one was hurt.

Officials said the residents of the two homes were temporarily housed in the Wetaskiwin RCMP detachment.
