Two women are recovering in hospital after a four vehicle collision on Yellowhead Trail Friday evening.

Edmonton police say a grey Cavalier had stalled in the centre lane of the highway near the 156 Street overpass around 5 p.m.

“This vehicle was rear ended by another vehicle heading westbound that caused it to travel in front of a semi tractor trailer unit,” Cst. Binoy Prabhu explained adding the second vehicle involved was a black Civic.

The two female occupants of the Cavalier were taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.

Cst. Prabhu added that Fire and Rescue crews had to cut open the vehicle to rescue the women.

A third vehicle was also involved after it struck the Civic but there were no other injuries reported.

Police said alcohol and speed were not considered factors in the collision.
