Vegreville RCMP are on the lookout for vandals after 21 tombstones were knocked over at an area cemetery over the weekend.

Police say the incident happened Saturday night  at the Riverside cemetery located on the east side of Vegreville.

Several solar lights were wrecked and flowers were tossed all around the property. Police say a road sign was yanked out and thrown at one stone marker.

The vandalism has brought tears to those who have loved ones buried there.

"This is so sad, it's so sad. Why will people do things like that? I don't understand it. Let them rest in peace, you know...why are they doing this? It's terrible," said Margaret Stefane, whose husband and son are buried at the cemetery.

She says she hopes those responsible are punished.

Police are following up on some leads, but haven't made any arrests.

If anyone has information they are being asked to call Vegreville RCMP at 780-632-2223 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
