A 19-year veteran with Edmonton police is recovering from injuries to his face after he was assaulted and robbed by a group of six men while riding his bike to work early Friday morning.

The incident happened just before 5 a.m. while the constable was heading east on his bike along 105 Ave. and 102 St.

Six men approached the police officer and began throwing stones at him. After hitting him in the forehead with a rock, the six men robbed the officer of his bike and personal belongings.

The constable then called 911 and police officers were able to locate and arrest the group of males, with the help of the Canine Unit.

The police officer was treated in hospital for soft tissue damage and was released.

Six men between the ages of 19 and 23 are in police custody awaiting charges.
