A young basketball player from Whitehorse is in an Edmonton hospital after falling from a hotel balcony before a tournament was set to get underway in the city.

The boys' basketball team was in Edmonton for a tournament called the Great Canadian Shootout.

The boy is being identified as 15-year-old Brendan Matheson.

His basketball team had just finished checking into the south side Radisson Hotel last Thursday afternoon when security was called about a fall from a fourth floor balcony.

It appears the boy was trying to jump from one room to another.

"What I know for sure is a little after four Thursday afternoon...security got a call that a young male had fallen off of one of the balconies from the fourth floor on the north side of the building. The boy was obviously in some distress and was actually trying to get himself up, our security agent was able to contact 911," said manager general manager, Robin Cumine.

The boy was taken to hospital where he remains in stable, but critical condition.

A vigil was held Monday morning at the Whitehorse United Church. The boy's [parents flew in from Whitehorse this weekend to be with their son.

He remains at the University of Alberta Hospital.
