As of January 1, Bill 6 is now in effect for farmers and ranchers in Alberta.

On New Year’s Day, Workers’ Compensation Board insurance coverage became required for paid workers, excluding family members. However, employers have until April 30 to register with WCB.

Also in effect, Occupational Health & Safety basic standards will apply to workers while onsite.

The Alberta Government says detailed OHS standards specific to farms and ranches will be developed over the next 18 months, through consultations.

Employment standards and labour relations codes are also still being developed.

The province says the consultations will include six tables of representatives from the agricultural industry, who will be appointed in February.

An online survey opened on November 23 and closes on January 3.

The farm safety legislation passed on December 10.
