A local cab driver is being recognized for his efforts to get dangerous drivers off the road.

At Thursday night’s Edmonton Police Commission meeting, Kennith Thomas was presented a plaque for reporting two alleged impaired drivers in a month.

“I'm shocked ... it will go on my wall for sure,” said Thomas emotionally.

"It's the second time he's come to our attention as a concerned citizen who's helping us keep Edmonton a safer city," said Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht. "So we thought we'd just have this opportunity to recognize him publicly."

According to police, the cab driver was instrumental in apprehending an alleged drunk driver that fled the scene of a single vehicle crash on Whyte Avenue last weekend.

On May 31, he followed another alleged impaired driver across the city to the Southgate LRT station, where police converged and made an arrest.

"He was driving with a flat front tire and he didn't even realize he had a flat tire, and he actually ended up on the LRT tracks," said Thomas. "Thank god it was three-thirty in the morning and there was barely anybody on the road."

Thomas says he doesn’t go looking for these things, he just happens to come across them.

"I also have kids so really, that's what went through my mind ... had he hit somebody I cared about and also to stop him from hitting somebody else. Hopefully he's thankful for that and maybe I saved him from trauma in his life as well."

A 20-year-old man was arrested for last week’s incident and charged with impaired driving and hit and run.
