Two people have been charged in connection with an Amber Alert that was issued in the Edmonton area on Friday.

The Alert was issued at 12:24 on December 19, with police releasing descriptions of three children and a red minivan they believed the suspect was driving.

Shortly after 5:00 pm the Amber Alert was canceled, and police announced that a male suspect had been taken into custody, and the three children had been located and were unharmed.

A rural area near Niton Junction was closed for several hours as a result of the alert. Police were called to the property after a citizen spotted what he believed was the minivan involved in the Amber Alert.

At approximately 3:00 pm, investigators surrounded a barn on the property. Two hours later, a male suspect was taken into custody without incident, and a woman and three children were transported from the scene.

RCMP said no weapons were recovered from the scene.

A 50-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman have now been charged with three counts of child abandonment, three counts of causing a child to be in need of intervention. The man is also facing additional charges.

A court date for the two accused has not been released.
