A provincial court judge has handed down a sentence to an Edmonton senior convicted of his 18th drunk driving related count.

66-year-old Robert James Dornbusch was sentenced Tuesday afternoon to 6 years in jail, but will spend only 40 months behind bars based on credit for time already served.

Dornbusch has also had his license suspended for ten years.

The most recent drunk-driving incident occurred on Christmas Day in 2007. While driving with a suspended licence, Dornbusch collided with another car, seriously injuring a female driver.

A breathalyzer test conducted by police three hours after the crash showed that Dornbusch was above the legal limit.

Earlier this year, Dornbusch pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing bodily harm and two counts of driving while disqualified.

The Crown had asked for six to eight years, despite the fact that the December crash was the first time Dornbusch's drunk driving had caused an injury.

During sentencing arguments held on Wednesday March 18, Crown attorney Julie Morgan told the court, "That's just plain luck rather than good planning." She went on to say, "He is a terror on the road."

Dornbusch's lawyer was looking for two years behind bars.
