A cyclist has died following an incident in Rundle Park Saturday evening.

Police said the 40-year-old man was cycling with family members along trails just east of the golf course when the tragedy occurred.

“From what we understand he was with his three nephews and a family friend. The kids got a bit ahead and he was trying to catch up,” Edmonton Police Service’s Scott Pattison explained.

Pattison said the man was heading down an incline where there were stairs when he lost his balance.

“The impact from the ground caused him injuries that caused his death.”

Police and EMS crews responded around 6 p.m.

“It just appears to be a very tragic set of circumstances where he was out having a really enjoyable bike ride with his family members and certainly wasn’t expecting something like this.”

The man was declared dead at the scene.

Pattison said police have been trying to contact the man’s wife, who is out of the country.
