Investigators have officially called the death at a south side apartment building a homicide.

Police responded to an apartment building located on 109 Street and 53 Avenue after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Paramedics had notified police after they were called to the south side apartment building.

“Upon our arrival, the child was indeed in medical distress,” EPS Acting Inspector Malcolm Allan said. “He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.”

In a press release, police confirmed a 7-year-old boy had died.

CTV News learned Tuesday morning from police that a woman has been taken into custody for questioning.

Police confirmed Tuesday evening that a 32-year-old woman had been arrested and remains in custody – however charges had not been laid.

Few additional details were available – but an autopsy was conducted Tuesday afternoon, and confirmed the death was criminal; however the cause of death has not been released.

Police said this is the third homicide of 2013.
