Edmonton's Oliver neighbourhood is about to get a new addition. Monday night, city council voted nine to four in favour of proceeding with plans to build the 45-storey Emerald Tower on Jasper Avenue and 114 Street. The tower’s first floor will be home to retail, the three above parking and all other floors will be residential.

Councillors and the developer, Regency Developments heard from concerned citizens Monday night before the vote. Opposition from residents including members of the Oliver Community League raised issues with the proposed three levels of above-ground parking. The group suggesting lower floors be used for more retail or a gym.

City administration did not approve of the project due to the design and what they believed was a lack of public amenities. Mayor Don Iveson voted against the condo tower saying, “I would have liked to have held out for a little more.”

No construction date has been set.
