One man is now facing charges after he was shot by RCMP in Whitecourt on Boxing Day.

Police have charged Luke Louis Kock, 20, with three counts of assaulting a police officer with a weapon, one count of flight from police, one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, one count of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and two provincial violations.

The charges stem from an incident on Friday, December 26 in Whitecourt where two RCMP officers were conduction a traffic stop.

In a statement RCMP have said, “as a result of the actions of the driver both RCMP members responded by discharging their service pistols and the suspect vehicle fled.”

ASIRT has indicated that the vehicle was later determined to be stolen and it had collided with two police vehicles as it fled the scene.

They have also said the officers fired at the vehicle several times.

When the vehicle was located in a residential neighbourhood minutes later officers transported the 30-year-old male driver and a 25-year-old female passenger to hospital.

The passenger suffered a minor injury and was released.

Officials said that Kock was in custody while he was in hospital recovering from non-life threatening injuries.

His first court appearance has been scheduled for January 13 in Whitecourt Provincial Court.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the actions of police.
