The Capital Line was shut down for nearly four hours Wednesday morning after a mechanical failure on one of the trains.

Service was disrupted just after seven as a train leaving Southgate malfunctioned. After trying to use one track for both directions crews were forced to stop service to the line.

This affected commuters at Century Park, Southgate and South Campus stations. Crossing gates from Southgate to 40Avenue also came down, delaying rush hour traffic.

The city put contingency buses in place to get commuters from the affected stations to the next available station.

Crews discovered the issue was a broken strap that is supposed to hold up a wire.

“That caused the wire to sag and the pantograph, which is the part that connects the train to the actual overhead wire, caught on that sagging wire and it resulted in the system disruption.” City spokesperson Jennifer Laraway said.

Service to the Capital Line was restored shortly before noon.
