Police in northern Alberta said one individual was seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 63 late Wednesday morning.

Boyle RCMP said the crash took place at about 10:30 a.m., on Highway 63 near Township Road 670.5 about 25 kilometres north of Boyle, Alberta.

According to police, a southbound pickup truck struck a northbound semi-tractor trailer – the impact caused the semi to burst into flames.

Police said the driver of the semi managed to escape before the vehicle became fully engulfed – the driver was pulled from the vehicle and was airlifted to Edmonton by STARS Air Ambulance, in stable condition.

Traffic was detoured for about four and a half hours while crews worked to put out the flames and clear up the wreckage.
