RCMP have been investigating after a toddler drowned in a made-made lake in Morinville.

Officials said the 2-year-old girl had been playing at the park in the Lakes subdivision with her siblings Saturday when she went missing.

Police responded at 11:42 a.m. and officers discovered the child unresponsive in a nearby pond.

“The child was located very quickly after it had been reported to the RCMP,” Sgt. Jeremie Landry said.

He said that lifesaving efforts were initiated but the child was later pronounced deceased by EMS.

Morinville RCMP and the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office will continue to investigate the circumstances of the girl’s death.

“Any time there is a fatality we want to make sure that we leave no stone unturned. Part of that process is determining exactly what led the child to be found in the pond where she was found,” Sgt. Landry explained.

He also said that the tragedy demonstrates the importance of supervision for young children.

“It is so important that children, especially young children, are supervised at all times, especially when there are bodies of water nearby.”

Sgt. Landry confirmed the girl was from the Town of Morinville but no further details have been released.
