Central Alberta RCMP are investigating a serious collision near Sylvan Lake that left one man dead Wednesday.

Police said the crash occurred on Township Road 385, east of Range Road 23 at about 2:20 p.m. – where an eastbound pickup truck was hit by a southbound train.

Emergency crews on the scene reportedly tried to resuscitate the male driver, and only person inside the truck at the time – STARS Air Ambulance was called to the scene, but was eventually called off, as the man succumbed to his injuries.

The identity of the deceased has not been released, but police said he was a 21-year-old man from Benalto.

Red Deer RCMP investigators were on the scene Wednesday afternoon – it’s believed the truck collided with the front end of the train, just as the train crossed the roadway.

The road where the collision occurred was closed while investigators were on scene, but it was re-opened hours later.
