Several vehicles were smashed Monday morning during a police chase that saw the neighbourhood of Inglewood blocked off by Mounties. The beginning of the chase was caught on camera.

Dramatic surveillance video showed an officer chasing a man through the East Hill Shopping Centre parking lot and across 22 Street into the Inglewood area.

“The incident unfolded rather quickly,” said Staff Sergeant Jeff McBeth.

Moments before the chase began a blue truck can be seen shaking back and forth in the surveillance video. RCMP said it was a resident using their own vehicle to help the lone Mountie block the suspect - who was in a stolen truck - from fleeing.

“The occupant of the stolen truck backed into the police car multiple times, at which point civilians engaged and assisted our officer,” explained McBeth.

RCMP said a black Ford Ranger was the stolen truck involved. The back end of it was left damaged and covered in dents. It was towed out of the parking lot just before 10:00 a.m.

The situation began following a report of a suspicious vehicle in the shopping centre: “A suspicious vehicle we got 100 [calls], and 99 of them are nothing, and one of them turns out to be an incident such as this.”

Despite multiple vehicles being hit Mounties said no one was injured in the pursuit. Officers brought in the K9 Unit to help find the suspect, who was arrested on Inglewood Close roughly half an hour from when the chase began.

A containment-area on Inglewood Drive was set up for residents’ safety, as they didn’t know if the suspect was armed.

McBeth said: “In this morning’s arrest, I would say that that’s successful that nobody was injured, especially when you involve containment and now we’re tracking with the dog. It just goes to show the talent and skill and professionalism by all of our officers.”

McBeth also added he’s thankful to those who helped this officer, but wants to remind the public to think of their own safety.

The investigation is ongoing, it’s not known at this time if drugs or alcohol were a factor. Charges are also pending against a man in his 20s.
