One person is dead and another suspect is on the run after the attempted robbery of an armoured truck in south east Edmonton.

Officers were called to the TD Bank in Mill Woods, just before 1:00 a.m., and say they found a dead man on the ground nearby.

The man killed was 40-year-old Randy Munian, former roommate of convicted prostitute killer Thomas Svekla. Munian testified for the crown against his old roommate at Svekla's trial in 2008.

It's alleged that Munian and another suspect approached a Garda truck, pepper sprayed the guards, and demanded cash. Police confirm one guard shot Munian.

Munian died from a gun-shot wound to the torso, the Edmonton Medical Examiner confirmed late Friday.

The guards were treated for pepper spray injuries at the scene.

Sources told CTV Edmonton that there is money missing from the armoured truck, but the exact amount taken is unknown.

Investigators are searching for the second suspect who witnesses describe as being approximately five-foot-ten with a medium build and he was wearing a dark hoodie at the time, police said.

Isabelle Panelli, director of marketing and corporate affairs for GardaWorld, said in a statement that the guards are safe and that the company is providing support to them and their families.

"The incident is under investigation and we are fully co-operating with the Edmonton Police Department," Panelli said.
