A student at Father Michael Troy School has been suspended, and could be expelled, after a BB gun was fired, and a student was hit in the leg.

Police said officers were called to the school at about 11:30 a.m. Thursday – and said a girl in Grade 7 was hit in the leg by the BB, which was fired by a boy in the same grade.

School officials said the boy had brought it to school, and accidentally discharged it.

“Believing that the safety latch was on, and the safety latch was not on, he hit another student,” Edmonton Catholic Schools spokesperson Lori Nagy said. “So the female student that was hit has quite a welt on her leg. She’s going to be fine.”

Police confiscated the weapon, and took the handgun-style BB gun from the school about an hour after the incident.

No charges are being laid, officials with the school district said there wasn’t any pre-planning or intent involved in the incident.

The male student was suspended, and expulsion is being recommended.

“We take all weapons complaints very seriously, and unfortunately a really good student made an unwise decision,” Nagy said.
