Firefighters rescued five children and a woman during a fire in a northeast Edmonton residence Saturday afternoon.

Crews responded to the fire at 460 Abbotsfield Road at approximately 11:30 a.m.

There was smoke and flames when crews arrived, a fire official said. Firefighters rescued five children from upstairs and a woman in the downstairs area.

“There was a lot of fire damage, a lot of extensive damage within the ceiling,” District Chief Brian Lees said. “So investigators will check it out, determine a final cause and determine, too, how long they will have to stay out of the location.”

Lees also said the fire could have been much worse.

“They’re attached locations, so the fire could’ve spread up through the ceilings, but knocking it down from the outside and the quick interior fire attack stopped it from spreading.”
