A man from Brooks, Alta. is dead after being zapped with a Taser by police.

Mounties said they used the Taser on 40-year-old Grant William Prentice, while they were investigating a disturbance in Brooks on Wednesday.

Police said the man experienced medical distress after the Taser was used.

He was taken to hospital where he later died. Police said Prentice was known to them.

NDP Leader Brian Mason is now calling for a ban on the weapon, but Alberta's Solicitor General Fred Lindsay is disputing the call. Lindsay said the device is an effective tool for police and they help protect both police and the public.

Mason argued some people have died after being zapped with a Taser and he said police in Newfoundland have stopped using the weapon and Alberta should also.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is now investigating the incident.
