An eight-month investigation has led ALERT to seize four prohibited firearms, including two homemade MAC-11 submachine guns.
The guns were allegedly manufactured at a machine shop just west of Edmonton, unbeknownst to the owner of the shop.
Charged are 37-year-old Jacob Balan and 29-year-old Amy Brogden. The pair were arrested and jointly charged with 62 criminal offences, involving the making, possession and trafficking of firearms.
ALERT Edmonton's Gun and Gangs unit was assisted by Edmonton Police and RCMP in their investigation.
Four prohibited firearms were seized including a Beretta handgun (equipped with a suppressor), a modified Suomi submachine gun with two oversized magazines and the two homemade MAC-11 submachine guns, outfitted with suppressors and oversized magazines.
ALERT is still investigating exactly how many homemade submachine guns were manufactured, and believe some of the weapons have found their way to the criminal market.
