The body of a woman found dead on a rural driveway in Strathcona County has been identified by RCMP as a 21-year-old sex trade worker.

An autopsy completed Friday revealed the Edmonton woman was the victim of an apparent homicide.

Investigators are not releasing her name or the cause of her death.

Around 11 a.m. Thursday, her body was found on a rural acreage on Township Road 534, about a kilometre west of Range Road 220.

A resident discovered the body on his driveway when he was out for a walk. The long driveway runs through a rural acreage and continues through a heavily wooded area.

Project Kare, a unit investigating the death of high-risk individuals, is now helping RCMP in the investigation.

Despite their involvement, RCMP Cpl. Darren Anderson said the woman's disappearance was not being investigated by Project Kare at the time of her discovery.

"How involved was this victim in the sex trade? We don't know," Anderson said. "Do we think it's a great extent? No, but there was indications that there was involvement in a high-risk lifestyle."

The woman's name is being withheld until family members can be notified.
