An Edmonton man found guilty in the killing of his pregnant friend will remain in prison after Alberta's highest court rejected the man's appeal.
Jared Baker was found guilty of first-degree murder back in 2007 for the killing of 19-year-old Olivia Talbot.
In a two-to-one decision, the Court of Appeal ruled that there was enough evidence for a first-degree murder conviction.
At Baker's trial two years ago, the Crown prosecutor argued that Baker should be found guilty because he was angry at Talbot for using drugs while pregnant and knew what he was doing when he shot her.
The defence said Baker should be found not criminally responsible because he was mentally ill and had a drug problem.
Baker testified at his trial saying that he was convinced he was the son of Satan and by `crushing the serpent's head' -- meaning killing Talbot and the fetus -- he could `walk like Jesus.'
Outlined in court documents, Baker and Talbot had been friends since elementary school and started to experiment with crystal meth while they were in Grade 8.
Baker is serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.
