The Provincial Court of Alberta has fined and ordered a demolition company to remove an unauthorized landfill located east of Edmonton.

The province said McColman & Sons Demolition Ltd. received the order, after pleading guilty to charges under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and the Water Act last year.

The company was sentenced under a creative sentencing order, which requires the company remove all waste from the site, and address any negative environmental impact on the site by January 1, 2015.

In addition, a stop-order has been issued to keep the company from using the site as a landfill for three years.

Remediation of the site is estimated to cost $1.85 million – the company was also fined $20,000 for operating the landfill.

The company was charged with one count each of operating a landfill without registration, and conducting an activity related to the destruction of a wetland.
