City councillors addressed the problems Edmontonians have been facing in regards to rusted and falling street light poles on Wednesday.

According to a report presented to the Transportation Committee, there are over 75,000 street light poles around the city and 10 percent of them need to be replaced.

City councillors say the deteriorating poles are not made of galvanized steel, which would have extended the life span for 75 years.

The report mentions the City replaces approximately 1,500 poles per year with newer galvanized steel standards, however at that rate it would take 30 years to replace all of them.

Councillor Scott McKeen admitted some of the street light poles are in such bad shape that a few of them fall down every year.

“That was news to me, that we’ve had light poles falling down and that of course is absolutely unacceptable,” said Councillor Mckeen.

The next report will be released in the first quarter of 2016.
