RCMP west of Edmonton are investigating the sudden death of a man, who was seriously injured late last week outside of a Stony Plain bar.

Police said officers were called to a bar in Stony Plain at 2 a.m. on September 28, where it was reported a bar patron had assaulted a staffer at the bar.

It’s believed that the employee was hit in the head by the customer, and was struck unconscious.

The man, identified by RCMP and family as Travis Colby, 30, of Stony Plain, was rushed to hospital, but police said he never regained consciousness.

Colby’s family told CTV News Colby was declared clinically brain dead Tuesday morning.

Since Colby’s death, family and friends have turned to social media to share their grief, an outpouring of support his mother was comforted by.

“He has touched many hearts,” Shirley Colby said. “On his Facebook page, it’s unbelievable how many people sent messages.”

Colby told CTV News she wanted her son to be remembered “as a caring, loving, father, friend, brother, son, the guy with the biggest heart.”

The grieving mother said her son loved to go camping with his girls, and loved music.

Colby said her son was a bouncer at the establishment, and believes he had tried to break up a fight outside the business when he was hit in the side of the head, a strike that caused a bleed on his brain.

Despite her son’s recent death, Colby said her family wants to share his story, in the hopes of helping other families.

“We want this to be out there so this doesn’t happen again,” Colby said. “So somebody can learn from this and understand that he was the kind of guy he was, you know, he was more loving than anything.”

An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday, RCMP are still investigating.

A memorial service is being planned for Monday, October 7, at the Stony Plain Pavilion.
