Fire crews from 8 neighbouring municipalities battled a blaze that lit up the sky north of Grande Prairie Tuesday night.
Crews were called out to the town of Sexmith, located around 25 kilometres north of Grande Prairie, around 7:35pm after reports of a structure fire. 39 fire fighters battled a fire at the Sexsmith grain elevator and were able to contain the spread of the flames after the structure collapsed.
With one grain elevator completely destroyed, Sexsmith Mayor Claude Lagace hoped firefighters could contain the flames, "The elevator is gone, we're trying to save the surrounding building that are owned by the town that are for museum purposes."
Crews worked late into the night to limit damage to a nearby grain elevator, which sustained some damage, and put out any hot spots.
The grain elevators had been unused for a number of years, maintained by the Sexsmith and District Historical Society as historical buildings.
There has been no estimate on the damage to the buildings, nor the cause of the fire.
