Edmonton police have charged a man with second degree murder after a woman's body was found in a Jasper Avenue apartment building.

Joshua James Houle, 27, has been charged with second degree murder.

The incident happened around 3:25 p.m. December 31. Officers were called out to an apartment complex on Jasper Avenue and 83 Street.

Staff Sgt. Bill Clark said the landlord noticed some water dripping from one of the units.

"The landlord checked the suite and found a large amount of blood. He then closed the door and called police," Staff Sgt. Bill Clark explained.

Staff Sgt. Clark said there were "obvious signs of trauma to this female.

"Definitely there was a lot of blood at that scene and there is no doubt it was quite gruesome."

Police said they found the male suspect at the scene when the arrived.

"They arrested a male inside the residence at the time," Staff Sgt. Clark explained.

The woman was believed to be in her late 20s and did not live in the suite but police said they believe the two were not strangers.

"Our indications are that they did know each other," Staff Sgt. Clark said.

Neither the name of the victim or the suspect has been released.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday morning.
