Mayor Stephen Mandel will be at the World's Fair in Spain for the next ten days to learn how to successfully bring the event to Edmonton in the near future.

The city is planning to bid on the 2017 Expo. Mandel will meet with the World's Fair organizing committee in Saragossa, Spain to find out what Edmonton should do to be picked to host the event.

"We need to have a great deal of analysis yet and council needs to make some decisions in the fall as to the next step of allocating money to do this," said Mandel.

If Edmonton was picked as the host city for the 2017 Expo the event would fall on the same day as Canada's 150th birthday.

The World's Fair was first held in London in 1851.

In terms of economic and cultural impact, it is considered to be the third largest event in the world, behind the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.
