Edmonton Police have confirmed the late night death of a man inside an inner-city apartment suite Wednesday night was murder.

The Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy on the victim, identified as a 50-year-old man, police said his identity was being withheld pending the notification of next-of-kin.

Police said the cause of death has not been determined.

The results came after police were called by paramedics to the apartment block located at 106 Avenue and 101 Street just before 9 p.m. Wednesday night.

Police said the victim had been found unresponsive in a suite located on the eighth floor of the building.

Officers on the scene described the building as ‘notorious’

“It’s an old building, been around for a long time,” EPS Inspector Brian Nowlan said at the scene Wednesday night. “It has quite the reputation.”

Immediately after the investigation began, police questioned a woman who was in the same suite where the body was found.

Police said she reported the death, but was not considered a suspect.

Homicide detectives are investigating, and are still speaking with witnesses and interviewing persons of interest in the case.
