It was a frightening ride for bus passengers Monday evening after a man attempted to take over a city bus.

Edmonton police were called to the West Edmonton Mall bus terminal around 6:30 p.m.

It's believed two men and a woman on board demanded cash from several passengers before one of the men jumped on the bus driver's lap and grabbed the steering wheel.

The bus driver managed to safely park the bus before the suspects fled to the mall.

"We commend the bus driver for remaining in control of the bus and keeping the bus patrons safe," said Insp. Shane Loxterkamp with Edmonton police.

The two men were caught shortly after by police, but the female suspect is still wanted. Samson Joel Auger was charged with mischief and uttering threats, and remains in custody. The accused also had outstanding warrants.

No injuries were reported.

The incident comes just weeks after the city and Edmonton police announced new safety and security systems for Edmonton transit.

Police Chief Mike Boyd said in the wake of recent assaults on buses, ETS officers will be out in full force, sometimes in uniform and sometimes wearing plain clothes.

New technology was also set to be introduced to help enhance safety on buses and LRT trains, including a new radio system with a dedicated emergency channel, increased installation and testing of operator shields aboard buses, and closed circuit TVs to help monitor passenger activities.

Over the past two months, four city bus drivers have been assaulted on Edmonton transit.
