Crews are searching a lake just west of Edmonton – after a man who had been tubing slipped underwater, and didn't surface.

Emergency crews were called at about 1 pm Saturday after friends of the man lost sight of him as he was tubing on the lake.

The friends in the boat doubled back to find him, but did not see him surface.

RCMP on the scene told CTV News the man had not been wearing a lifejacket. According to police on the scene, the boaters had the correct license, and were using a spotter at the time.

Police said the tube he was riding flipped in the middle of the lake.

"The tire tube flipped over, one individual was not wearing a life jacket," Sgt. Ian Gillan said Saturday. "We are currently conducting a marine and air search for that individual."

Police also said two other men who were in the boat had to be rushed to hospital, suffering from hypothermia.

At this point in the investigation, police don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the incident.

CTV News has learned search crews will continue to search for the man until they find him, or it gets dark – the situation is considered a rescue mission.
