Man arrested after Sunday morning shelter-in-place order in Fort Saskatchewan
The man who prompted an emergency alert in Fort Saskatchewan Sunday was arrested a few hours later.
RCMP issued the alert late Sunday morning, warning residents that a man was armed and dangerous in the Pineview area.
The man was wanted in connection with a firearms complaint from earlier in the day. Officers had been called to a home after reports of gunshots, and they saw the man leaving as they arrived.
The man was reportedly armed and multiple RCMP units (including canine officers and a helicopter) were called to help search.
"We did utilize all the resources that we had," said RCMP Cst. Kelsey Davidge. "This kind of thing can change at a moment's time, so it's kind of logistically hard to know where someone is when we're actively looking for him."
An emergency alert was issued for Fort Saskatchewan and residents were asked to shelter in place while officers searched.
"The safety of everyone and really that community is really our number one, so we decided to put out that shelter in place for everyone," Davidge said.
Around 1:15 p.m., RCMP found the 32-year-old man at an apartment building near 94 Avenue and 94 Street in Fort Saskatchewan. He was arrested "without incident."
A heavy police presence was expected to remain in the area for several more hours Sunday.
No additional details have been released.
