One day after Syncrude put a full page advertisement in the Edmonton Journal, Premier Ed Stelmach announced the province will investigate the death of close to 500 birds that landed on a tailings pond north of Fort McMurray April 28.

"You can apologize for the event but we will continue to investigate the incident and make sure to attach the responsibility to, obviously, a break down somewhere and that's the purpose of the investigation," said Stelmach.

Syncrude said the sound canons they use to deter birds from the pond were not working at the time. They say the cannons are now in operation.

Greenpeace plans to hold a news conference about the incident on the steps of the Alberta Legislature Monday morning.
