A Wetaskiwin RCMP officer was beaten and had his pistol taken from him as he was trying to apprehend a fleeing suspect at an area grocery store Thursday evening.

Police say they were called to a Safeway store around 6 p.m. on a report of a suspicious person.

When an RCMP officer arrived and attempted to arrest the suspicious individual, the suspect fled. The officer chased him, but was attacked by a second man.

Officials say the man struck the officer in the head and chest before tasking off with his weapon.

The two suspects were eventually arrested later that night. The officer was treated in hospital and has since been released.

No names have been released at this point.
