The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is continuing their investigation into a weekend collision that claimed the life of a 51-year-old woman.

On Friday, May 22 at about 11:15 p.m. police attempted to make a stop on a BMW535i, in the area of 100 Avenue and 185 Street, when then driver sped away. Police officials say the officer did not follow in pursuit of the BMW.

Continuing at a high speed eastbound on 100 Avenue and allegedly driving through two red lights along 170 Street, the BMW collided with a taxi, carrying two passengers, which was travelling northbound on 170 Street on a green light.

Police say the collision caused the BMW to veer off the road into an adjacent parking lot where it struck a parked vehicle. The driver then ran from the scene, but was later apprehended by officers a short distance away.

All three occupants of the taxi were treated and taken to hospital by EMS, where a 51-year-old female passenger later succumbed to her injuries. The taxi driver and other passenger have both been released.

The driver, 29 year-old James Miller-Laney, and passenger of the BMW both suffered non-life threatening injuries. Police have laid several charges against Miller-Laney, including dangerous driving causing death and flight from a police officer causing death.

EPS Major Collision Investigations Unit is continuing their investigation.
