Athabasca RCMP said charges were pending after a person struck in a highway hit and run, that left a young man dead.

Officers were called to a serious injury hit and run collision on Highway 55 in Athabasca just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigators said it was believed a van, driven by a 36-year-old Athabasca woman, was headed eastbound on Highway 55 on a section of the highway called ‘east hill’ when the vehicle hit a 12-year-old male pedestrian.

The youth was propelled into the ditch by the force of the crash. The vehicle then left the scene of the crash.

The young man was taken to Athabasca Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

At about 11 p.m., the suspect driver turned herself in to police – the vehicle was found a short time later.

As a result of the crash, traffic in that area was diverted for about two hours.

RCMP said charges are pending against the driver.
