An Edmonton woman was presented a cheque for more than $20 million Tuesday – she won the money in the April 30 Lotto 6/49 draw.

Bogumila Mroczkowski won $20,997,902.50 – she said she doesn’t usually buy lottery tickets, but picked one up when she was out buying milk at the Shopper’s Drug Mart at 49 Street and 137 Avenue.

“I don’t have a regular habit of buying tickets,” Mroczkowski said in a statement. “I buy when I think of it and I thought of it when I went to the store to get milk.”

Checking her ticket prompted a range of emotions for Mroczkowski.

“When I scanned our ticket I was shocked,” she said. “I felt everything – surprise, disbelief, happy, scared, everything.”

Mroczkowski said she and her husband both checked the ticket more than a few times, just to double, triple, and quadruple check that the ticket actually won.

“We probably checked the ticket 20 or more times before claiming our prize.”

The winner said she has a few ideas for the winnings – but first: retirement. After 26 years working at the same place, she said she’s glad to be retiring earlier than she had planned to. Next on the list: helping out family, buying a newer house, and travelling.
