Edmonton Fire said investigators had determined improperly discarded smoking materials sparked a blaze in a seniors’ home that left one person dead on November 9.

Firefighters were called to the facility in the area of 80 Street and 101 Avenue just after 10:20 p.m. Thursday, November 9.

Crews arrived on the scene minutes later – they managed contain the blaze to one room, and it was considered under control by 10:42 p.m.

One person was pronounced dead – officials later said it wasn’t clear if the individual’s death was fire-related.

Officials said investigators had determined the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoker’s materials.

Damage has been pegged at $80,000.
