A 41-year-old Grande Prairie man is facing several criminal charges after allegedly assaulting police and fleeing RCMP twice near Jasper Thursday night.

Jasper RCMP conducted a traffic stop on Highway 16 at 11:45 p.m. for a speeding offence. Officers attempted to arrest the man for impaired driving, but he “actively fought with officers,” and fled the scene after an unsuccessful energy weapon deployment.

Police located the suspect a few minutes later on Highway 93 and conducted a “high-risk vehicle stop.” The suspect initially stopped and then fled again, RCMP said.

RCMP then deployed a “tire deflation device” and arrested the man when the vehicle came to a full stop.

Phillip Mannix was charged with flight from police, assault on police-related charges, two counts of impaired driving, two counts of dangerous driving, two counts of resisting arrest and two counts of failing to comply with a court order.

Mannix is in custody and is set to appear in court April 27.
