Edmonton police have laid charges against a man for his alleged role in the assault and robbery from a senior Wednesday afternoon.

Edmonton Police Service officials said officers were called to a reported assault and robbery at a home in the area of 122 Street and 136 Avenue at about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers were told a 77-year-old man had been in his rear detached garage, running his car with the door open when he noticed a man walking in the alley – it’s alleged the older man was jumped from behind, assaulted and robbed.

The man called for help, which his wife, and neighbours responded to and the police were called, police said pedestrians in the area were made aware of the incident and noted the direction the suspect fled the scene.

Police said a perimeter was set up right away, and the suspect was eventually found inside a grocery store, he was arrested and police recovered the contents of the victim’s wallet.

Paramedics treated the senior, and took him to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries – the EPS Victim Services unit and the Elder Abuse unit are expected to help the victim recover.

Now, Darcy Loyie, 29, is facing a number of charges, including break and enter and aggravated assault, break and enter and robbery, possession of stolen property, possession of a stolen credit card, use or traffic a stolen credit card, and fraud.

Loyie remains in custody.
