A 46-year-old man has died after being driven in a police transport van from the Edmonton police cell block to the Remand Center.

Police say the man was yelling and kicking while being loaded into the van, along with five other prisoners, around 11:50 a.m. Monday.

The man quieted down while en route, so officers say they stopped the vehicle to check on his condition.

The man was said to be in medical distress and the officers began to perform CPR. The prisoner was brought to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating.
